Shingunto Koshirae
“Pilot Sword”
This is a Shinto period wakizashi signed Iga no Kami Minamoto Kikuhira. The 19 ½” or 49.5 cm blade is thick and healthy without flaws and has a deep sori. The hamon is O-Gunome Midare and full of activity. I think this is an extremely well made blade.
The shingunto koshirae is later war type with a wood saya which is covered with a leather combat cover. The tsuba is pierced and the tsuka has a family mon on the kabutogane. The overall length of the koshirae is approx. 33 1/2” or 85 cm and it remains in good condition without any damage. The leather retention strap looks like a new replacement.
Wakizashi mounted in this type of short gunto koshirae are often described as “Pilots Swords”.
