High Quality Antique Katana
Grooved Blade in Full Polish
Minty Gunto Koshirae with Owners Name
I have no hesitation in describing this sword as absolutely splendid and worthy of a place in any nihonto or militaria collection. The blade which is in fresh polish is thick and healthy with a graceful sori, and exhibits all the qualities of a fine Koto however it could be later. The nagasa is 70.5cm or 27 ¾ inches and has bohi that extends down through the nakago. The prominent choji midare hamon is abundant with activity, and the jihada is beautiful and well stacked.
The shingunto koshirae is in excellent or “Minty” condition, and fits the blade like a glove. The saya has the gloss lacquered finish generally found on early 94 pat. Gunto, and has a surrender tag with the Japanese Officers name “ Mr Katayama Takao “ glued to the side. The pierced tsuba, clasp hands sarute, and bordered edge blue brown company grade tassel complete this early koshirae.
The quality of the blade and koshirae suggests that Mr Takao probably came from a wealthy and prominent family of the time.
My poor photographs don’t do this sword any justice.
